Unlike other upholstery materials, vinyl, also known as polyvinyl chloride (PVC), requires regular upkeep and special maintenance. Luckily, the procedure is quick, easy, and cost-effective.
Here is the best way to clean a vinyl recline – both soft and hard vinyl. We’ll also throw in some pro tips on how to maintain your vinyl recliner.

How To Clean Soft Vinyl Recliner
You can keep your soft vinyl recliner in mint condition by washing it regularly with a damp cloth.
For deep cleaning, use mild cleaning agents such as dish soap and all-purpose cleaner. Never use bleaching agents, abrasives, or strong solvents.
Add an ounce of the cleaning agent of your choice in a gallon of water and mix. Then use a sponge or a rag to clean the recliner.
In case your recliner has mildew, use ammonia. Add four ounces or so of ammonia into a gallon of water and then use a sponge to clean the affected areas.
As a rule of the thumb, you should always spot test your cleaning solution on an inconspicuous spot before you start cleaning to ensure it doesn’t discolor the upholstery.
Cleaning Hard Vinyl Recliners
The procedure for regular cleaning of a hard vinyl recliner is similar to that of a soft vinyl recliner. The only exception is that you can use baking soda as an abrasive to get rid of scuff marks on a hard vinyl recliner.
While using baking soda, you need to wet the affected area first before sprinkling some soda ash on it. Use a soft cloth to rub the surface in gentle circular motions and then rinse it off with clean water. You can also use denatured alcohol to remove scuff marks and dye stains on hard vinyl recliners.
To keep your hard vinyl recliner shiny and attractive after cleaning, coat it with automobile paste.
Maintaining Your Vinyl Recliner
- Clean minor stains and spills as they occur. This will reduce the chances of using abrasives and bleaching agents for stain removal.
- Clean your chair regularly to prevent stains and keeps your chair looking elegant.
- Cover both your indoor and outdoor recliner when it’s not in use. This will prevent the chair from gathering dust and dirt. It will also protect an outdoor recliner from the sone and other extreme weather conditions.
The cleaning procedure is the same whether yours is an outdoor recliner covered with hard vinyl or a T.V room recliner covered with a cozy and soft vinyl material.
